Bonifazio wins his first race of the season in Lugano

Due to the demanding circuit that stretches over the Arbostora peninsula, the one-day race GP Lugano is not necessarily known as a race for the sprinters. But by riding a very active race TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA managed to lead Niccolo Bonifazio to his first victory of the season.

The overall distance that the riders had to cover at the GP Lugano one-day race was 185 kilometers, and each lap featured three longer ascents. TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA fielded a team that was prepared for all scenarios: If the race came down to a sprint decision, Niccolo Bonifazio and Davide Cimolai were the protected riders. And if there were to come an earlier selection on the climbs, the team management was looking for Przemyslaw Niemiec, Mattia Cattaneo and Valerio Conti. At first however an escape group of 17 riders took off at the front, and with young Slovene Luka Pibernik this group contained one rider in blue, fuchsia and MERIDA green as well.

But this group never managed to extend its lead to more than three minutes, and after 150 kilometers the attackers got reeled in - just when the race went into the last lap. From there TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA invested quite some effort into controlling the race: At first Przemyslaw Niemiec set a pace on the ascents that would not allow for any attacks from the peloton. When eight men got away on the final ascent of the course, Valerio Conti was part of that group - but the attack was neutralized in time.

Thus it all came down to a sprint of a group of about 30 riders in Lugano, and TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA made sure that Niccolo Bonifazio could start his effort from the best position possible. „Nick the Quick“ made the best of his team mates’ work and distanced Francesco Gavazzi, Matteo Montaguti and Rasmus Guldhammer in the dash to the finish line. For Niccolo Bonifazio, this was the seventh win as a professional and his first win of the season 2015. For TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA this was the fifth victory of the still young season.
