Sacha Modolo celebrates his first win of the season

Sacha Modolo celebrates his first win of the season

The last week of April has brought some nice successes for TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA: Sacha Modolo managed to win the fifth stage of the Tour of Turkey while Kristijan Durasek is in 2nd position in the overall standings. At the Tour de Romandie Rui Costa is riding in great form which has been rewarded with two top5 finishes thus far.

At the end of the first stage of the Tour of Turkey Sacha Modolo had to settle for 4th place, but that only amplified the motivation of TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA’s sprinter. The next day he went neck to neck with Mark Cavendish in Antalya, but he lost the fight for the stage win by a wheel diameter. But his 2nd-place finish showed that a stage win was well within reach for Modolo in Turkey. The third stage ended with the first mountaintop finish of the stage race, and here it was Kristijan Durasek who rode into the spotlight: The Croatian was one of the strongest riders on the climb to Elmali and only was beaten by Davide Rebellin in the fight for the stage win.

The next day’s stage was another opportunity for the fast sprinters, but there were some climbs on the way to the stage finish in Marmaris. These were no big issue for Sacha Modolo, but with 18 kilometers to go he was involved in a bigger crash together with Xu Gang, Chun Kai Feng and Mario Costa. TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA reacted quickly however and launched the sprint for Roberto Ferrari instead, which resulted in a 6th place. The fifth stage ended with another bunch sprint, but the finale brought some frantic racing and a series of attacks before this unfolded. The riders in blue, fuchsia and MERIDA green were very active in this finale, and Sacha Modolo timed his acceleration to perfection to celebrate his first win of the season in Pamukkale.

At the Tour de Romandie TEAM LAMPRE-MERIDA missed out on a top10 result in the opening team time trial by fractions of a second. A cat.2 climb at the end of the second stage weeded out the pure sprinters. Rui Costa crossed the finish line in Saint-Imier in 5th place with Diego Ulissi following suit in 15th. One day later the team showed a strong performance on the way to Porrentruy: The riders in blue, fuchsia and MERIDA green neutralized one attack after the other, and in the finale Rui Costa was piloted to the front by his team mates. But they started their effort a bit too early and Rui Costa was on his own with a kilometer to go. He continued to fight bravely and crossed the line in 4th, getting another top5 result.
